Current Movie: Xanadu – May 9
About This MovieMore
Nuts! This one didn’t reach the tipping point in time. Unfortunately, it won’t be showing.
Olivia Newton John is lighting up the big screen in the undeniably odd and deliciously horrible, Xanadu on Thursday, May 9 at the Egyptian Theatre (there’s also a May 10 showing with bar service).
If you had one of Zeus’s muses at your disposal to guide your way, what hallmark of achievement would you bring to pass?
If you said, “I’d build a roller rink!” then Xanadu will make perfect sense to you.
The rest of us will be scratching our heads at what largely amounts to a 90-minute Electric Light Orchestra music video starring Olivia Newton John and Gene Kelly (yep, Gene Kelly).
Don’t get me wrong: Xanadu has a killer soundtrack. But the accolades end there. It’s a movie about roller skating. Michael Beck couldn’t act his way through a Sesame Street sketch on the letter M, let alone carry a role lead (note that his other claim to fame, The Warriors, was also up for vote in our so-bad-they’re-good vote). There are several scenes of roller skating while ELO tracks play. It’s so bad.
Which is the point. It’s so awkward and awful that it’s a fun watch! It’s reached cult status. They even made a Tony-nominated satirical Broadway musical of it in 2007.
Now, I can hear all you ONJ fans sharpening your claws. Listen. It’s a bad movie. ONJ is in it, which for some is a completely redeeming quality. The rest of us are going to enjoy how awful a film this is while boogieing to the sweet disco-rock of ELO. It’s going to be a blast, and a unique evening at the movies!
Need more convincing? I’m not sure this will help:
