The Coen Brothers’ first real break-out picture!  A brief 9 years after Raising Arizona hit small theaters, Fargo is released to critical acclaim and Oscar-winning renown.  Yet another kidnapping-based plot (are see seeing a pattern?), Fargo retells a true account of extortion and ransom gone very wrong.

A more intentional film, Fargo was nominated for Best Editing, Best Supporting Actor (William H. Macy), Best Cinematography (snow is tough to shoot in; it was bested by the English Patient which was shot largely on sand), Best Director (Joel), and Best Picture (Ethan). Francis McDormand’s performance won the Best Actress Oscar, as did Joel & Ethan’s original screenplay.

Come down to the Egyptian to see some real movie magic as the Coen Brothers hit their stride!

Jerry Lundegaard is in a financial jam and, out of desperation, comes up with a plan to hire someone to kidnap his wife and demand ransom from her wealthy father, to be secretly split between Jerry and the perpetrators.
